Summerhayes Fishery Open Sellicks Lake.???

Traveling down with Nick Harvey today And after skipping the hilltops breakfast we went straight to the fishery, My main concern was on arrival Ray Cooper informed us their lot had a club match on Sellicks today So after running it through with Pete the owner he Double checked to realise he had indeed double booked the lake! Change of plan then" So the match was switched to Longs Lake, I did get chance to mix up a little groundbait before the start so borrowed Nicks drill to make the task easier"

I was hoping for a peg where I could reach the far bank as I had plenty of casters left over from yesterday along with what Darren didn't use so planed to give it some across to the far bank in the hope to catch carp shallow, I ended up on peg 17 below the motorway for those who know the place, And I couldn't of ask for a further swim to the far bank if I'd tried' Ramming the mini extension up the ass end of the 16mt section just to get close to the bank! (A good day ahead then??)

I did manage to find what I thought was a clean bottom close to the far bank in 2ft or so of water so had a 0.3g (Spring Eye) float made up on 0.13-0.11 and an 18 808 hook, A 3x8 Chanti on the same line - hook, to fish up in the water towards the far bank, I new with the wind coming at me slightly it was going to difficult from the off so the only other option I had today was two silvers lines both at 11mts left and right in 4ft of water where I could feed it differently, and a 3mt line where I could loose feed casters by hand.

At the all in I cupped two small balls of groundbait & micro pellet at 11mts to my right & 4 balls of groundbait containing worm and casters the same distance to my left, I fed some chopped worm & caster over to the island at 16 plus plus plus' MTS" and began wrapped around the pole with half a worm on the hook (No Messing"). After a couple of minutes lifting and dropping I lifted into what I thought was a fish only to find myself snagged totally to the far bank" OWE HELL".., I was praying my hooklenght would break but must of hooked up to it further up the line coz I lost the lot! Bollocks..! Sorted, A day on the silvers it was then!  To be honest I was wasting my time as every time I went to pick the catty up to feed casters over the top the wind blew up and I had no chance of feeding properly.

Back to plan-B then and sooner than I would of liked I started at 11mts to my right with a 4mm expander on the hook all I caught tiny skimmers and roach, It made no difference switching baits but I kept at it hoping for some bigger skimmers to show, That didn't happen until after 2 hours when I had a 1lb fish' but from what I could see even those fishing for the carp were struggling, I would like to say my match got better after the first skimmer but it wasn't to be I had 4 more for the rest of the match all taken on a different hookbait! along with 2lb of bits" to end the day with 7lb odd of silvers and 6 carp for 20lb odd, Silvers wise it was hard for most with Steve Jackson Taking the top weight with 11lb including two fantail's" for around 4lb which are included as silvers at this fishery but would of been no good yesterday' lol.

Top weight on the day went to Giles Cochrane on fancied end peg 36 near the hut ending the day with a great 90lb odd, mainly catching shallow with caster on the hook over to the far bank although the bulk of his catch was taken in the last couple of hours,
 Winner Giles Cochrane.

A bit disappointed to struggle as much as I did today but I tried just about every trick in the book but they didn't want to know, it turned out my final weight beat all the pegs around the area I was in so there wasn't much feeding for most, back to viaduct next weekend on both days by the look of it as I've put my name forward for the Clic Sargent Charity Match next Saturday ahead of Sundays individual league,

Emerald (Saturday) Silvers League Rd 2.

Back to Emerald lake to day for the second round of my silvers league and after a welcome breakfast at hilltops with traveling partner Darren greenwood we made are way to do the pegging before the draw, Alan the owner Had switched the aerator on due to signs of fish gasping for air in the last few days with the still mild airstream we have at the moment so we were hoping it wouldn't effect the fishing? I let Tim Lewis draw for me today and low and behold I only ended up on the same peg I had the first match being peg 7 on the far bank of the car park, I fancied a draw in the earlier pegs 3,4 or 5 as thought the fish may have pushed up a bit with the oxygen but never the less expected to get bites as you can from all around the lake.

last time I just opted on two short lines but came unstuck when the carp arrived in numbers so chose to swap things around a bit today fishing one short line at 4mts towards the tree in 4ft of water with caster or pieces of worm head on the hook over loose fed casters and nuggets of groundbait, the rig was a 0.3g PB3 on 0.13-0.09 and an 18 PR434 hook, followed by a 3x8 Chanti on 0.11-0.09 to fish up in the water should the case arrive, Keeping it quite simple I chose just to have another line at 9mts again with a 0.3g PB3 float on 0.11-0.09 and an 18 63-13 hook to fish maggot over small amounts of groundbait. For company I had John Barker on peg 6 and fellow blogger Ken Raynor on peg 8 but couldn't see anyone above me so would have to rely on Darren over on peg 2 to let me know how things were going.

At the all in I cupped 2 small balls of groundbait with some worm and casters in on the short line and started on the 9mt line with a single red maggot on the hook just cad potting a small nugget of groundbait over the top, It didn't take long to get a response but the fish were on the small side so started to change around hookbaits trying to find a better stamp of fish, After a hour I estimated to have around 9lb including a few hybrids pushing a 1lb and was doing ok from what I could see, All the time I had been flicking a few casters onto the 4mt swim and after the hour I had a look but after two quick fish they weren't happy to settle this close just yet so didn't spend to long on it, The 2nd hour was as good as the first catching some more net size hybrids and some tench to a 1lb and was admitting to 20lb, Darren informed me it was tough going were he was so it made sense to catch on the longer line as long as I could before having to chase fish around, I did expect things to slow up and going into the 4hr I noticed from others I could see the pace people were catching had slowed some what, I decided the best way to keep catching was to take a couple of fish off each line, re-feed a little then switch between swims catching what it could, Going into the last hour I began to feed heavier with caster on the 4mt line by hand and was pleased to catch some tench pushing 2lb and some bigger skimmers, Along with good size hybrids over nuggets of groundbait and single white maggot on the hook from the 9mt swim. At the all out I estimated to have a good 50lb which was great days fishing by any means and with people admitting to 30 & 40lb weights the lake had fished well again. Tim Lewis next to the bridge on peg 3 of are bank started the ball rolling with a mainly tench catch of 43lb followed by other 40 & 30lb weights it was my turn and it was nice to see my catch total 61lb for a great days sport, It turned out it was enough to take the win in this round picking up £50 along the way,

 Part of my catch.

 Runner up Tim Lewis.

As it stands Tim & Myself are Sitting at the top of the league but with only two rounds gone and anglers dropping there worst result theirs a long way to go, Back again in two weeks for Rd3 so looking forward to it.

Sunday 19 October 2014

Viaduct Silvers League Rd 2.

Back to Viaduct today for this popular silvers league and after the usual breky at hilltops with team mate and traveling partner Don Sutherland we arrived in plenty of time for us to mix are groundbait before the draw, With Cambell lake being used for a club match today it meant the match was spread over Cary, Lodge & Spring, Cary and Lodge were used yesterday for the all winners silvers final which ended up going the way of  Mr consistent Andy Power with 50lb odd, with back up weights in the 40's. I did fancy a draw on Spring for a change as it hadn't been used for matches this year but holds a good head of skimmers if you manage to draw the right areas and I fancied the early numbers opposite the island or on the far side in the higher numbers so was pleased to end up on the far bank peg 19 which is just on the end of the island,
My main concern though was I had venue co-owner Paul Greenwood on next peg 18 who was always going to be hard to beat" To top off good company I had my old friend and Angling Mail correspondent Roger Baker
who now lives in Penzance having emigrated from somewhere "UP NORTH" on peg 20 so we made it interesting by having a quid on it although Paul declined as he told us he always gets battered if he does, So I did my level best to talk him into it but it wasn't to be!

I planned to keep it quite simple and put my faith in catching big skimmers on the long pole and on the groundbait feeder towards the island trying to advoid the over hanging branches, I made two rigs up being 4x12 wire stem skimmer floats on 0.13 - 0.09 hooklenghts an 18 PR434 hooks in around 5ft of water, I plummed two swims up at 14mts off to my left and at 12mts just to my right but planned to feed them slightly different, I realised when I went to set my rod up I had again forgotten my reels' but Roger came to my rescue and lent me one of his, even though it looked like it would take pride of place at the antiques road show"lol.

At the all in I cupped 5 balls of groundbait on the 14mt line with a couple of balls containing some casters and floro pinkees, followed by two smaller balls on the 12mt swim with some chopped worm and casters in, Starting on feeder with double dead red maggot after 5mins I was fiddling with something only to look up and see my tip bouncing away' A good start as it turned out to be a 2lb skimmer" it was short lived though as no more followed although over the next hour Paul was up to about 6 skimmers all taken on the tip also on maggot but I couldn't get a bite? I switched to the 14mt line after 90mins with double caster on the hook and after 5mins I had another 2lb skimmers followed by one the next put-in which flew off the hook right were I was fishing" Great!..

After 10mins with nothing I decided to top this line up with another ball with casters added and switched to the 12mt swim with the head of a worm on the hook and had a bigger 3lb fish but then I couldn't get another bite on anything" Paul was still catching on the feeder and was up to about 10 skimmers so I fed some more worm in groundbait on the 12mt swim and went back on the tip, I felt I had to try and draw some fish across from Paul so changed to a larger feeder filling it with casters, After 10mins it seemed to do the trick as I had 3 smaller 1lb skimmers but they didn't seem to want to settle as after that I just had the odd fish, One thing I did notice though is that Paul wasn't catching as well when I was fishing the tip which was odd? With two hours to go I felt that if I had any chance of catching Paul up it had to be on the pole so was hoping they had turned up in numbers".

Starting on the 14mt line with caster I had a 2lb skimmer but was having trouble seeing the float properly due to the wind so switched to the 12mt with double dead maggot on the hook, It was instant" 6 big skimmers in 6 put-ins got me really excited! and a couple were 3lb plus so with an hour to go it could get interesting" again my instinct told me to top it up with another ball and worm as the peg slowed rather than waiting for it to fade completely, By the time it came to the all out I didn't want the match to stop" but the last 15mins were a nightmare as I had two big skimmers fly towards me and shed the hook resulting in nothing going in the net" and with Paul adding some late fish including one on the whistle I felt he had beat me by a fair margin?

Lucky for me Roger hadn't managed to drag the skimmers away from me and being the first to weigh on are lake it was safe I had at least won the quid" I was surprized when my total went 39lb.
 My Catch.

But was more surprized that Paul hadn't been in front as I had thought with his total going 40lb which was enough to win the section, A bit disappointed to come so close to beating an angler of Pauls quality on his own water and the couple of flyers cost me but I know Paul had the same problem but I was a good enjoyable battle never the less.
 Paul Greenwood.
Back at the results the weights were again close and after winning his section yesterday in the silvers final old team mate Gary O'Shea went on to win todays match with 47lb from Cary lake, It turned out my weight was enough for
second on the lake behind Paul but second in the section so at least I got my £20 back, A really enjoyable day and looking forward to the next round.

Summerhayes Open Sellicks Lake.

After Leaving it to the last minute this week to decided where to go I didn't have much choice left so after managing to get in summerhayes for the late draw the weather was still on are side although it had gone a lot cooler over night which I felt would make a difference to the weights today. I wasn't disappointed to find myself on peg 12 at the bottom end of the lake and although peg 11 was in I still had a nice margin to my right as well as being able to get tight to the far bank at 14mts where I would start the match,

Rig wise I set up a 4x10 chanti on 0.13-0.10 and an 18 808 to fish over in close to 3ft of water , Another 4x12 Chanti on the same line with an 18 PR478 hook to fish meat at 6mts in 4ft of water and the same rig could be used to fish down to my right away from the bank in the deeper water where I expected the fish to be happier to feed, (The clear bit that can be seen in the photo). my last rig was one of the drennan 0.2g clear dibber on a long line for swinging if they came shallow.

At the all in I cupped a palmful of meat & Hemp onto the 6mt line in the open water off to my right and started across with a 4mm expander on the hook, feeding a few hard 4mm and some micro pellet via a cadpot, I fully expected some indications right away but after swapping around between baits it took me 45mins for my first fish being a 3lb carp on half a worm, Just one more carp across in the next hour on corn told me things were going to be hard" I had already had two short looks on my inside & 6mt line without any signs and looking around those I could see were also struggling except for Tom Magnel around on peg 17 having a few fish early.

The middle part of the match was hard and in a couple of hours all I had was a small tench and a skimmer at the bottom of the far shelf on 4mm expander and a bigger skimmer tight over again on corn, I couldn't get a sign in the deeper water towards the bank where I had been feeding a few 6mm hard pellets by hand all day so with 90mins to go I re-plummed a swim tighter to the bank in about 2 and a half feet of water and after 10mins of lifting and dropping a 6mm cube of meat over meat and hemp fed again via a toss pot I had a carp of 4lb but again no bites saw me try the 6mt line with two 6mm cubes on the hook where I had been feeding a few cubes by hand, a 3lb fish first dob in had me all excited but it was short lived as again I couldn't seem to get more than a bite off each line? In the last 40mins I had two more carp off the open water 6mt line and another carp on the new swim close to the bank again on double meat but from what I could see the lake had fished hard which was certainly due to the cooler nights, When the scales got to me Jim Jenner was toping the weights with 29lb odd, and my 2lb odd of silvers added to my carp weight gave me a total of 26lb, further around Tom & Colin Wilkins both weighed 33lb before Aide bishop went on to take the top weight of the day with 44lb odd catching most of his fish late with pinkee on the hook.
 Winner Aide Bishop.
Yet again although the lake hadn't fished as well off late it was a nice close match with a couple of fish making the difference and two more to me would off been nice' but I only missed one bite all day and didn't lose anything so I couldn't of tried much harder. Back to viaduct for Rd2 of the silvers league next Sunday but the long range forecast doesn't look promising.

Emerald Silvers League Rd 1.

Finally it was a return to Emerald Pool to have another crack at the silvers, Not Quite ending up with the numbers I had hoped for but with 9 of us after my miss count of people in the morning! saw me change the format slightly instead of me thinking I had 8 and would base the series on a two sections of four I decided to keep the six match series to a simple 9 peg section, Receiving 1pt for winning the section down to 9pts for last place although the best 5 of 6 matches to count dropping your worst result. After a very welcome breakfast at hilltops with traveling partner and good friend Darren Greenwood  as I was starving" and didn't even save the extra sausage for the dog! We were all keen to get on with it and after the usual run though the rules and regulations I let Andy Gard draw for me ending up on peg 7 on the far side of emerald pool near the end of the lake,

I planed to catch as short as possible ideally my top kit plus one and just my top kit although I had notice the colour had dropped out slightly from two weeks ago so I didn't plan my faith in catching shallow at this range, I had A 4x12 pencil float to fish on the deck in 4ft of water on 0.13-0.10 and an 18 808 hook on my top kit with a long line and another the same with a short line, a 3x8 chanti on 0.11-0.09 and an 20 808 just in-case they did come off the deck. Both my lines were in the two clear shadows you can see in the pic, One to my right and one next to the tree to my left.

I had Barry Fitchew On peg 6 and Tim Lewis on peg 8 which was the end peg on are bank but couldn't really see anybody else because of the trees, At the all in I put two balls of groundbait and casters by the tree and a pot of loose groundbait on the other line, starting on my long line rig on single caster on the hook to my right I didn't take me long to start catching some small skimmers and roach, after 20mins I tried to my left by the tree and had a 1lb skimmer first dob in and some 8oz hybrids followed, I was feeding both lines by hand with caster and by swapping between the two after the first hour I estimated to have around 10lb, It was a case of the same in the second hour but things slowed down some what and after catching a 2lb tench after the 3lb hour I had around 28lb, My main concern was there was a big head of carp on the surface further out in the lake for the first few hours which had disappeared and I felt they were bullying the silvers away" I Wasn't Wrong!" After a great start to the match to say I got carped out was an understatement" landing 22 in the last 90mins! I even tried the 3x8 chanti out towards the middle of the lake with a single caster on the hook where I had fed nothing and had a carp as the rig hit the water" I estimated I had put 10lb of silvers in the net in the last 3hrs but I just couldn't go anywhere without being plagued with carp but it had to be expected as apart from a few showers it was a mild day again.
First to weigh was Darren on peg 1 who had a great day catching lots of small fish on caster to weigh 51lb and after a few high 20lb weights and Barry having 30lb it was my turn and after two weighs my total went 41lb, Tim had done well and after a miscount of weight by fellow blogger Ken Raynor" lol his total ended up with 42lb which was enough to take second place on the day ahead of myself, didn't get Tim's pic as the mistake wasn't noticed till we finished (sorry Tim). I was paying the top 3 on the day so snuck in to pick up £25. Darren's weight was enough to win by 8lb earning himself £50.

Well a great start to the league though be it more of a knock-up was enjoyed by all and until the cold weather hits the carp will still be active but it was the same for most but still a great day of silver fish for all of us.

Winner Darren (Big Bird) Greenwood with part of his catch.

 Part of my catch.

Sunday 5 October 2014

Viaduct Fishery Silvers League Rd 1.

With the first round of the popular Viaduct silvers league today I was looking forward to the change of scenery and to fish against some who's who at this type of fishing along with the usual venue regulars, I stopped off for the normal hilltops breky on route with Gabriel before making are way to the fishery, With 50 odd anglers taking part the match was spread over Lodge, Cary & Cambell today and considering I haven't got around to fishing the venue since last winter I was relying on a bit of inside information, The first problem occurred when I was chatting to Bob Gullit before the draw and he mentioned trying 4mm hard pellet on a shorter line I was a bit baffled as I was lead to believe it was banned from Jan 1st and had removed any signs of pellet from my net bag the night before" Well you can guess were my first penny's went on the day! Back to the draw and I found myself on peg 98 Cary which I was told was a good area so that was music to my ears'.

I had already prepared my groundbait the night before so didn't have to faff around with that when I arrive at my peg leaving me plenty of time to sort my rigs, Firstly I made up a 0.02g rig on 0.15-0.10 and an 18 PR434 hook to fish at 4mt in 3ft of water with caster over loose fed caster, After pluming up carefully I decided to just to try the rig to see it was shotted correctly only to see the float shoot under and an angry carp attached" It didn't hang around and after bolting across the lake it managed to strip my whole rig!" Marvellous ...

With a new rig the same attached I moved on to setting up a light 3x10 Chanti to fish tight in to the bank on 0.11-0.09 and an 18 808 hook but I couldn't believe it when yet again I tried the rig out and hooked another carp close to the bank which again wasn't happy although this time I managed to save the rig I was beginning to think what the hell I was in for when I got around to putting some bait on the hook!!" My last plan of attack was my long pole lines at 12 & 14mts where the depth was about 4ft on both so one rig would cover it being a 0.5g Nick Gilbert skimmer float on 0.15-0.10 and a 18 808 hook, I planed to fish at 12mts at a 10 o'clock angle and the 14mt line 2 o'clock to keep plenty of distance between the two swims, For company I had old timer Charlie Barns to my right on peg 97 but didn't look in the best of health and after I raised my concern he said he was just having one of his off days and would be ok and a guy on peg 99 to my left called Andy who I hadn't met before.

At the all in I cupped 6 balls of groundbait laced with casters and a few pinkees on the 14mt line, half a pot of loose casters onto the 12mt swim and began to drip feed casters on the both short swims and some hard 4mm pellet to my left at 6mts and began on the 4mt swim with single caster on the hook, It took me 10mins to get a roach of 2oz but things were rather slow and after a couple of smaller fish in the next 20mins wasn't the best start but I wanted to leave my longer lines to settle so switched to the lighter rig down the edge again on single caster where I had been flicking a few in, It wasn't quick but I was adding a few roach to 4oz and was putting some fish in the net as Charlie was still fishless at this point, but things were soon to change as the Andy had gone on his longer line and had two nice size skimmers in two dob-ins for over 5lb so I was soon out on the 14mt line with double caster to start with. after 5mins I had a nice 3lb skimmer followed by one of the same size on the next cast only for it to take off out the lake shedding the hook! After 20mins and another 3lb fish on caster and pinkee I was a bit hesitant to top the swim up with another ball laced with casters but felt it was needed whilst I tried the 12mt line again with double caster to start with. I fully expected it to go under but after a switch around between baits I never had a sign and after another 20mins I felt the need to change how I fed this line.

I had noticed Andy had now had around 8 good skimmers all taken on the worm so decided to pulp up a good helping and add it to a ball of groundbait with some more casters and cup this onto the 12mt swim. I had another skimmer back on the 14mt line nearly right away but couldn't managed more than one bite before feeling the need to top the swim up a little, I did try the short swims again throughout the day and although I had the odd roach off each I had to target the bigger skimmers for the rest of the match, No matter what it seemed to be a case of having to re-feed a small amount of groundbait after any hooked fish be it skimmers or CARP" By the end of the match I had lost a few and scaled down to an 0.09 bottom after foul hooking one and getting it all the way to the bank only for the rig to fly out snapping the tip off the float in the process! I did have 3 good skimmers fly" off the hook through the day which also seemed to un-settle the swim for some time" The fish seemed a lot happier to stay Andys direction as he had fish on and off throughout the match up to the whistle, I had about 7 good skimmers and a couple of smaller samples to go with my roach but Charlie had struggled the same as me to put more than one fish together and when the scales arrived Charlie ended up with 8lb odd before my fish went 23lb, Andy had a good day finishing up with 39lb which was enough to take the section by default as further down the lake Anton page had managed 42lb which was enough to see him in the main frame resulting in me picking up £20 again by de-fault but managing to end up 3rd in the section point wise so not to bad a start in the league, Else where the talk was of drawing peg 110 on Cambell lake as a match here in the week saw Steve Kedge win with 66lb of tench on his top kit and last years league winner and fellow blogger Tony Rixon not only did well enough to draw it, He went on to win the match with 43lb consisting of mainly tench and small fish short on caster so well done to him. The weights were close again today although most people had carp problems at some stage with the water temperature still quite high it made for a good match to start the league and I look forward to the next round.
